Privacy by default: Caption Flow features support offline processing, regardless of
whether the phone is online or not.
Due to quality limitations of offline transcription and translation models, we offer online options for
the best quality and convenience. Live Caption transcripts are saved as text on your device and can be
deleted in the app. Audio is not stored by Caption Flow.
1) Information We Handle
Audio and speech (Live Caption)
- Offline processing: speech stays on your device when you use offline transcription.
- Online processing: when you choose online transcription, audio is sent to the selected transcription provider (Google for Google captioning, or the speech recognition provider behind AI captioning) for processing.
- Saved transcripts: Live Caption automatically saves session text on your device. You can read and delete it from Saved transcripts in the app. Audio is not saved with it.
Screen text (Live Translate)
- OCR (text extraction) is always performed locally on-device.
- Instant screen translate captures the screen only when you tap Translate screen on the floating bubble. Android asks for screen capture permission first. Between taps the capture session stays paused (nothing is captured), and it turns off after 10 minutes without use, when the screen turns off, or from its notification. Screenshots are processed temporarily in memory and are not uploaded or stored.
- If online translation is selected, extracted text is sent to Google Translate. Extracted text isn't shared with any other third-party service or stored on our servers.
Account and premium data
- Premium uses Firebase Authentication to identify your account.
- Language-learning vocabulary you save manually, by double tapping a word on the caption overlay and clicking the bookmark button, is stored in our backend, linked to your account to easily retain the vocabulary.
Advertising
- Free users may choose to watch rewarded full-screen ads provided by Google AdMob to continue offline Live Caption in 30-minute blocks or gain access to Google Translate. Premium users do not see ads.
- Google and its advertising partners may process device identifiers, approximate location, and ad interaction data to provide, measure, and personalize ads according to your choices and applicable law.
Local files (Subtitle Overlay)
SRT files opened from your storage are not uploaded by this feature.
2) Permissions
- Microphone/Internal audio: live speech transcription.
- Screen capture: text recognition for Live Translate and Instant screen translate.
- Display over other apps: subtitle overlays.
- Internet: premium verification, online services, and model downloads.
3) Third-Party Services
- Google Cloud services (only when online features are enabled).
- A speech recognition and translation provider for AI captioning and AI translation (only when you choose them). Audio is processed to return text and is not stored by Caption Flow.
- Firebase Authentication (a service owned by Google used for account sign-in and identity).
- Google Play Billing (subscription purchase processing).
- Google AdMob and the Google User Messaging Platform (advertising and consent choices for free users).
4) Data Retention and Security
Account-related data is protected with reasonable safeguards. Real-time audio Live Caption and extracted screen text for translation are not stored on our servers.
5) Children’s Privacy
Caption Flow is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
6) Policy Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. Any updates become effective when published.
